Today I’m on my way to the land of Shiner Bock and Schlitterbahn for the Austin SCBWI conference. Looking forward to seeing some of you there!
But even though I’ll be spending my time today making my way through security lines, I’ll still happily give you the news of the week:
iPAD!!!!!!! OMG OMG OMG iPAD OMG iPAD OMG!!!!!!!
And there you have it.
(Actually I’ll be back on Monday with Last Week in Publishing)
Have a great weekend!
Christi says
Then let me say "Welcome to Texas!" I'll be about 90 miles from you, but don't worry, I won't stalk you or anything.
Probably.
abc says
I don't eat meat, but people say you have to try Iron Works.
Breakfast taco from Taco Shack.
And if you can get to a TacoDeli–YOU HAVE TO GO BECAUSE OMG YUM!
Schlitterbahn is overrated.
But the Alamo Drafthouse is a must.
Oh, I wish I was there right now stuffing my face with chips and queso.
Anabel says
Have a great time in Texas. About the news of the week. I was dissapointed, I expected something better.
Jen says
Well Welcome to Texas! Have a great time!
Laura McMeeking says
I'm so jealous! I can just taste the BBQ. You should definitely go to the Salt Lick if you haven't tried it before and you have a chance. It's good enough to make it on a Food Network special about BBQ!! 🙂
Brandon says
Ah Tejas. I was born 'n raised there. Austin is a fun city. and I agree that Schlitterbahn is overrated, although when I was in middle school, it was THE thing to do in the summer. Ah memories.
I think you should use the phrase "fixin' to" in a post just for kicks.
And, yeah, OMG iPad. I'm in love! Fastforward me to April 27th-ish please!
Vacuum Queen says
Ooh, do you mean the waterslides??? I've always wanted to go there. Take pictures of you with actual free time enjoying yourself. We'd all like to see if that happens.
Also, I'm sorry, but the first thing I thought of with the Tampax iPad, er, the Apple iPad was feminine protection. The darn thing looks awesome though.
Deaf Indian Muslim Anarchist! says
Meh, I don't even have the money for an iPad or Kindle. I wish they could make it affordable for us.
Kate says
Woot! I hope you have a wonderful time here in Texas, even if it is a little chilly (and rainy) right now. Enjoy the fantastic beers, and don't get discouraged when you find out that Shiner and Schlitterbahn are a bit more than a stone's throw from Austin – and each other. Texas is a big place, as they say.
Amanda The Semi-Published says
DeafIndian, maybe you can get a cheap Kindle from someone upgrading to an iPad.
JEM says
Wait? Say what? The great Nathan Bransford will be in my city and I might not see him? That's unacceptable! I need to find this mythical conference, stat!
Stephanie L. McGee says
Have a good trip!
Erin McGuire says
I second abc, you need to get yourself some breakfast tacos. 🙂
Tere Kirkland says
mmm, Shiner Bock. *drools*
Enjoy Austin, and try to enjoy the incredible live music scene while you're there!
Lisa Desrochers says
SCBWI Austin? The same weekend as nationals in NYC? Really?
And I'm missing them both.
Careful. The accent is contagious =)
Marsha Sigman says
I will be 2 hours from you in Houston! I knew I should have joined SCBWI! Oh well, that will be rectified in the near future.
I think it was the Jon Stewart show that said they named it IPad because TamPod was already taken.
Crass…but funny.
Margaret Yang says
I have to agree with Vaccuum Queen. iPad is a not a name that will appeal to women. Just sayin'.
Kristin Rae says
Welcome to Texas! Don't let our weather fool you. It will be different tomorrow… and the day after that… and so on.
ryan field says
I don't envy you standing on those lines and going through those security checks.
Josin L. McQuein says
You picked a heckuva time to come down here, it's friggin' cold! Way too cold for Schlitterbahn.
Have fun in Austin.
Dara says
Have a fun time in Texas!
P.S. The iPad is overrated. And I also agree with Vacuum Queen and Margaret on the name 😛
Alicia A says
Welcome to Texas. I came down to visit from the East Coast ten years ago and never left. Austin is a great city. Enjoy.

Have Fun!
Mira says
Quite frequently, I write something, and then read it, and then think – oh, whoops, this could be misinterpreted.
Anyway, the point is, Nathan, I hope you have an all around terrific time in Austin.
Trace says
Um . . . it's 10 degrees here in NY. I want to go to Texas!
Moira Young says
Have fun!
Marilyn Peake says
Have a great time in Texas!
Anonymous says
Have a Shiner Bock for me. I'm stuck up here in chilly New England.
Dreamstate says
Rudy's BBQ and Country Store… San Antonio's gift to Austin. Best BBQ EVER!
Have a great time!
Kathryn Paterson says
Dang. I'm in Houston. But welcome to Texas anyway. 🙂 And have a great weekend!
Christy Pinheiro, EA ABA says
I'm getting an iPad for the hubby. Seriously, though– they need to hire some women for their marketing dept. What's next, the iTampon?
Scott says
Have a safe trip, Nathan. I hear Austin's pretty awesome.
IPad? Have we crossed the line into feminine products already?
What?
Oh.
Meh.
Scott says
Great minds, Christy! 😉
Crystal says
I am very dissapointed in the iPad. I was reading the release information, and I had to scrounge around for even an inkling of the bookshelf/bookstore app. So obviously reading is not their target audience: Apple just wanted to come out with a fancyer, bigger iPhone and threw a book app in there.
Will I buy it? I am somewhat interested in it (but once again because of all the other features). They totally overshadowed the ereader part of this device, and it makes me sad. So I highly doubt it will be a big player in the ereader world.
And Vacuum Queen, the first thing I thought of when I heard iPad was maxi pad. I think I'll start calling it the iTablet instead.
TKAstle says
@ abc – Schlitterbahn may be overrated, but you gotta love the name.
I second the motion for Salt Lick – best sweet potato I've ever had. I've only been there once and I still remember it 5 years later.
A bit excited about the iPad, are we, Nathan?
Colette says
Wait… so does this mean you think the iPad is awesome? or absurd? or (fill-in-the-blank)?

Alexis Grant says
Have a Shiner for me! My fave beer 🙂
Emily White says
Have fun!
Sarah says
One word: Chuy's. Please, please go and your life will change. Tell me you like Mexican. Eat their Chuy Gooey and you can thank me later.
T. Anne says
Nathan, do you have a list of conferences you'll be attending this year? I looked around quickly on your site, but didn't notice any. I'll dig some more.
Have a great time!
Tambra says
I'm just outside of Houston. Wish I could be at the event.
Have a great in our wonderful state!
Best,
Tambra Kendall/Keeia Greer
Tambra says
Hey y'all from Houston, we ought to get together. It could be a fun time talking writing.
Just a suggestion.
Hugs,
Tambra
Claire Hickey says
Welcome to Texas! Austin is a fabulous town, beautiful too. If you have time take a ride in the "Hill Country". Have a great conference!
Claire H. 😀
anne vinsel says
never been to austin, so i have no texas/food thoughts, but iPad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i want the maxiPad version 😉 and am arranging for the appropriate amount of freelance shooting as i keyboard. by the time apple is ready, i'll be ready. the keynote and book functions alone are worth it.
Kaitlyne says
Well that summed it up well. 🙂 Hope you enjoy Texas. Some real Tex-Mex is a must. 😀
Christi Goddard says
I'm noticing an unexpected Texas trend in the posters (including myself). You should do some sort of demographic post or poll next to find out where your readers are from.
Perhaps we're not all cow-tippers out here, after all.
Or just do it as our second hobby.
Dawn Maria says
I'm an Apple gal through and through, but the iPad isn't knocking my socks off. I'm not sure the world needs a device for that huge grey area (Apple hopes) between the iPhone and a MacBook.
I am curious to see how the iPad ends up effecting e-book sales and this business we all love.
Donna Hole says
Uck, Texas. Not a pretty state to me. Not like CA. I don't know the places you've said you're visiting, but my lived just outside Fort Worth, and took me to The Rain Forest restruaunt nearby. Awesome place. The food and drink were great, the servers friendly and eager, and the entertainment was simply awesome. Made me forget the ghastly weather for a few hours.
Have a great time!!!

Donna Hole says
Oops! Thats "my Brother lived just outside…"
Been on the computer too much today and my fingers have keyboard lag.
