Dear Agent for a Day,
Angel Star is an edgy model, famous actress and successful pop singer, having achieved all of her childhood dreams at only twenty. What more could a girl want? Well, Angel only seeks a few more things, like her heroin addiction cured, her alcoholism repressed and her bulimia removed. When Angel finds herself miserable and broken at the apex of her career, she heads back to her humble beginnings in Texas to find emotional, mental and spiritual renewal, but she must first face the challenge of being accepted back into the family she left behind, igniting old flames and thwarting the paparazzi.
STAR FRAGMENTS is a 88,000 word young adult novel that chronicles the descent of a media darling shattered by Hollywood’s depravity, who learns that substituting materialism for family and love is what led to her self destruction and who eventually pieces herself back together with this newfound knowledge.
Several of my short stories have been published in my college newspaper and I am a regular reviewer of books and movies for my town’s newspaper.
Thank you for your time and consideration, I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Author

(There’s almost a story here, but the query is oddly worded. I would expect that imprecision of language and meaning to be present in the book as well.)

No. I have no interest in Angel and very little sympathy. And I wouldn’t want to be responsible for selling this to teenage girls. Sorry.

Thanks for your query. Unfortunately, I am quite selective about the YA I represent, and I think young readers deserve more than a redemption story of a Britney Spears-like character. However, another YA agent might disagree completely, so carry on. Good luck.

Dear Author:
I appreciate the opportunity to consider your work. After a lot of thought, I’m afraid I’m going to have to pass. I just don’t feel I can represent this project with the kind of enthusiasm it would require. However, this business is very subjective, and I encourage you to query widely. Many agents may feel differently than I do.
Thank you again,
Jnantz
[reason: I think this is promising, and will probably sell. I just don’t know the genre well enough to be certain. Sorry! But good luck placing it, I feel sure it’ll find representation.]
splatter says
Not-so-form reject
Reasoning: While I think this could be interesting, it’s just not my thing. If I’m not passionate about it, you don’t want me representing it.
I also thought it sounded a bit too much like a darker twist on the Hannah Montana movie that just came out. Or at least, what I saw from the ads. Her bad behavior sends her home to deal with… well… what you said, as I understand it. Though I’m sure it would sell, parents may have issues with the strong subject matter involved. (Just throwing that out there – I don’t know for sure, obviously, since it’s not my area)

Dear Author:
Thank you for your query and for allowing me to consider your work.
While your novel, “Star Fragments,” sounds exciting, I feel I’m not the right fit for your project. Therefore, I must decline on this project right now. But I do want to encourage you to continue submitting. Just because a project isn’t quite right for me, doesn’t mean the right agent isn’t just around the corner.
I wish you the best of luck with all your writing endeavors and in the querying and submission process. Persistence pays off, so don’t give up!
Best regards,

Reason:
– I’d like to see what makes the main character realize she has to change her life and what challenges she is facing (other than the generic terms “addiction”, “alcoholism”, and “bulimia”).
