Over in the Forums we’ve been talking about bad/absentee parents in young adult literature, and yet not all of the characters out there in literature would make terrible parents.
Right?
So. Who in literature would you choose to be your parents?

Loree H says
Mr. and Mrs. Robinson (not from The Graduate) from Swiss Family Robinson, novel by Johann Wyss
or Atticus
or Mama in Kathryn Forbes' collection of short stories entitled Mama's Bank Account (I Remember Mama)
Hart Johnson says
Weasleys. Hands down. I see I'm not alone. Little overly protective mum, but only because she cares so much.
Sam Hranac says
Glad to see someone else mentioned Ma and Pa Ingalls. (I'm betting they were fictional enough.)Thanks Mary McDonald! I would want them for the younger years.
As I got older, someone like the Vimes of Diskworld would be interesting.
Sam Hranac says
"…the mom from the children's book Love you forever."
I have to say, I can't read that without worrying about major boundary issues.

Isabel and Jamie from Alexander McCall Smith's Isabel Dalhousie series…A rich, philosopher mom, musician dad…they're cool parents. Maybe I would've turned out to be both brilliant AND musical like I've always wanted.
Ink Spills says
Hmmm…. I'd have to say Artemis Fowl and Hollie Short from Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl books. I mean, come on – between the two of them, they have money, magic, heart and smarts. Although that would probably make it tough to be a sneaky teenager, it'd be loads of fun on family vacations. Or even just living in the castle.
Kaitlyn (Kaitlyn in Bookland) says
Hands down the Weasleys. I would love to be a part of that family.
Stephanie Reed says
Penny Baxter from The Yearling for the dad and Mama from The Moffats.
Claudie says
I'm with Team Atticus on this one, hands down.

Terri Weeding says
Mrs. and Mr. March from Little Women. They never went ballistic, never lectured; instead they allowed Meg,Jo,Beth, and Amy to learn life's "little" lessons on their own.
Rebecca says
Definately Alanna and George Cooper from Tamora Pierce's Tortall books. Who wouldn't want a lady knight/King's Champion and an ex-King of Thieves/spymaster for parents?

Mrs. and Mr. March from Little Women. They never went ballistic, never lectured; rather they allowed Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy to learn life's "little" lessons on their own. Oh! They were masters of unconditional love too!
John says
Jack Reacher or Harry Dresden, and Stephanie Plum.

Like 90% of everyone that answered I pick the Weasley's too!
Second choice would me Lorelei Gilmore for Mom and Atticus Finch for Dad.
This is fun!
Jane Eisenhart says
Swede Levov from American Pastoral. And the grandmother (Charlie Kate) from Charms for the Easy Life. As a pair. 🙂
MaryAnn says
Julie Andrews as Maria (Sound of Music) as my mother and Mr. Cunningham from Happy Days as my father.
If not them, then of course the Weasleys. 🙂
Courtney says
Ramona's parents from Beverly Cleary's books. Hands down.
Sarah says
I'd have to say Faramir and Eowyn from The Lord of the Rings (they show up more in the appendices). They would be such cool parents (Eowyn would be an awesome mum!), and with Faramir for a father, what an education his kid would get!
Marjorie says
The parents in the film "Since You Went Away."
April says
Atticus Finch!
lodjohnson says
Ma and Pa Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie. Brings back childhood memories of reading under the covers with a flashlight.
Kermit Rose says
Who would make good parents?
Perhaps Clark Kent,
because he is so kind,
and Lois Lane,
because she is a most remarkably
competent human being.

I would like to put in Sally Jackson from the Percy Jackson series. She is a kind and supportive woman who really love Percy and would do anything for him. She even stayed in an abusive relationship just to protect him and accepts that he has to go off on his own quests sometimes.
Also, if we're not just doing characters in literature I'd like to throw in Bobby Singer. He may not have been Sam and Dean's actual father but he raised those boys as if they were his own and were there for they when their actual father was not

For me it has to be Princess Luna,
with Discord as that crazy uncle everyone has.

Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and
Miss Honey from Matilda
