Dear Agent for a Day:
I am seeking an open-minded literary agent that is looking for fresh, new material.
I am an unpublished author that has written numerous books – all that are different from anything that you have read or that is on the market. My genres include humor – a romance, short-stories, & science fiction; and a children’s book.
I am currently working on a mystery novel that is completely different from any mystery on the market.
Writing is my passion and I have been doing it for four years.
Should you require additional information, please call me. I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Author

Dear Author,
Thanks for your query, but I’m not the right agent for your work. I apologize for the impersonal nature of this response which is due to the large number of queries I receive every week. I wish you the best in your search for representation.
All the best,
Liz
[comment: this isn’t a query. It doesn’t tell me about a specific work. There are other problems, but I’m afraid I’ll slide to being non-constructive if I continue.]
Jeannie says
Thank you for querying our agency. Unfortunately your project is not what we’re looking to represent at this time. Best of luck.

Hallie says
Er, I perceived this query to be for the mystery novel, if it was specifically for anything. I’d hope the author would look up my guidelines and send me more appropriate inquiries.
Jada says
Form rejection.
Reason: Most/all agents need a finished manuscript before they’ll consider representing a novel. You also need to give some idea of what your manuscript is about in the query.
Inkblot says
Dear Author,
Thank you for your submission, but I am passing on it. I wish you the best of luck in placing it elsewhere.
Regards,
Agent Inky
Um, what are you actually querying here?

No. I don’t take authors without novels to sell.

Dear Author,
You will need to write an effective query before any agent will request your work. Please do so, in case you are hiding a few gems of novels that the world needs to see.
Thanks.

Dear Author:
Thank you so much for sending the Agent Literary Agency your query.
We’d like to apologize for the impersonal nature of this standard rejection letter. Rest assured that we do read every query letter carefully and, unfortunately, this project is not right for us.
Because this business is so subjective and opinions vary widely, we recommend that you pursue other agents. After all, it just takes one “yes” to find the right match.
Good luck with all your publishing endeavors.
Sincerely,
Agent for a Day

Dear Author,
Thank you for submitting your query. Please check my blog, agentyardoaf.blogspot.com, for information on writing a query letter. You haven’t included anything about the plot of your novel, so I’m afraid I cannot express any interest in it at this time.
Best wishes,

Dear Author,
I regret to inform you that you have sent me what I like to call a ‘blank’ submission. There was no information about a specific book. If you wish to get anywhere in this industry, please try inserting a summary or excerpt, from a completed novel, into your submission.
Thank you.

Dear Author:
I appreciate the opportunity to consider your work. After a lot of thought, I’m afraid I’m going to have to pass. I just don’t feel I can represent this project with the kind of enthusiasm it would require. However, this business is very subjective, and I encourage you to query widely. Many agents may feel differently.
Thank you again,

Dear Author,
Thank you for your submission. Unfortunately, I do not feel it is right for me. Remember that my opinion is just one. I urge you to continue to seek out representation with your manuscript.

Side note: You give the agent very little to work with in your query. Take some time to study what a query letter looks like. The Writer’s Maket along with many other books about publishing will have sample query letters in them. Going to conferences is also another way you can learn how to approach editors and agents.
Aimless Writer says
I’d have to pass as I have no idea what your book is about.
Just_Me says
Dear Author,
Please query me about only one novel, and only if it is finished. I’d be delighted to read your query when you describe the book.
Sincerely,
Agent
Note: Seriously! Query one book at a time. Don’t admit you are a first time author. And tell me about the book you want published. Look at the back of a book on the shelf… aim for a blurb like that with title and word count included.

Thank you for thinking of our agency, but not for us at this moment.
