I’d like to bring your attention to a manuscript I am shopping around to agents. As writers and readers yourselves I am hoping that you may have interest in this particular book.
In The Price two elves decide to defect from their kingdom and make new lives in a neighboring land, but when they attempt to leave they are thwarted by the river god that both protects and imprisons their people. The god exacts a price from the elves and casts them out into the neighboring kingdom far from each other. The novel follows one of those elves as he looks for his lost companion and comes to terms with the concessions he made to his god in return for his freedom.
The Price is a semi-high fantasy novel that combines the sensibilities of fable with deeper philosophical questions about loss and loyalty. I have published short stories and some poetry previously, but this is my first completed novel.
Thank you for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon,
Author

Thank you for your query. I am confused by enough elements that I am going to pass on it. Why should I care whether they defect? Is the river god the same as their god? How do the elves know each other? Help me understand better.

Dear Author:
Thank you for your interest in the “Be An Agent For a Day” contest. I find your idea intriguing, and I’m sure I will someday enjoy reading the finished project as this is the sort of story I enjoy. However, your query tell me enough of your plot to know whether this is something that I could immediately sell. I suggest you attempt to use text from your story that displays your skill as a fiction author. Show rising tension (what forces your elves to defect?), arc, resolution and conclusion and if at all possible, how your main character changes throughout the book. Only use the story’s major characters.
I wish you all the best.

Just as a tip, if there were more specifics about the emotional stakes involved, that would help. As in, why are they defecting, what is the relationship between the two (we don’t even get names) elves, etc, I might connect more strongly with the premise.
Thanks,
SDC

Reasoning: First paragraph unnecessary. Blurb is pretty good but the story seemed a little confusing–no mention of the remaining elf.
