Dear Agent for a Day:
When Kerri Ann marries tall, dark and handsome it doesn’t matter that he is Korean, until she is shunned by his conventional family. Unless being raised in a Montana shack by an alcoholic is a culture, she doesn’t have one. Her husband, California real estate developer Jae-Chun Lee, is seeped in old world bias and traditional marriage roles. He seizes her unexpected inheritance to rescue a joint venture deal which triggers every anxiety and agitation of her motherless youth.
Miscarriage, affair, marriage over. She disappears, launches her own real estate career and purchases the company she manages with a handshake, which doesn’t survive the ensuing offer from an aggressive corporation. She faces her new boss, her ex, only he’s not. He never finalized the divorce and she still wears his solitary pearl. Can the cultural divide be bridged, and why does she ask him for his mother’s broom?
This 100,000 word women’s fiction, and its potential sequels, clinch a quest to insure cross-cultural couples inhabit books as I raise my daughter born in Asia.
Thank you for consideration in representing A SINGLE PEARL.

Reasoning: Storyline seemed interesting, good query structure, but I could not find myself liking the characters. Novel might well succeed, but I didn’t feel drawn by writing style.

Dear Author,
Thank you very much for your query. While I appreciate the time and effort you’ve put into your work, I don’t believe this is a good fit for me.
Please remember that what doesn’t fit one agent may well fit another! I encourage you to not give up. In the future, if you have other manuscripts to query, I hope that you’ll think of me again.
Sincerely,
Agent Gryph
Nifaerie Noven says
Hi,
Being hapa and a Californian myself, this is a topic that hits close to home. Unfortunately, unless your novel takes place pre-Vietnam or unless Jae-Chun’s family is very back country and uneducated, I can’t see why a traditional Korean-American family would have problems accepting white daughter-in-law. It would be akin to a highly conservative American family forbidding their son to marry a woman with a job.
Re-query. I’d really love for this to work, but I need this to ring true.

Dear Author,
Thank you for your submission. While your query did originally capture my interest, I’m afraid I’ll have to pass. You first paragraph was intriguing, but after that, I found your summary somewhat confusing. If you can rewrite your query and clarify the plot, I might be interested, so feel free to query me again.

Dear Author,
I love the title you’ve chosen. Your story sounds wonderful, but I feel I am missing something in either your query or sample pages. There’s a spark missing.
Because of this I feel I am not the best advocate for your work and could not represent you in the way your manuscript deserves. I would be interested in seeing queries for your future work if you aren’t snapped up by the lovely Ms. Reid in record time.
Sincerely,

Thank you for your submission. I regret that I don’t feel this project isn’t right for me.
I wish you the best in your writing endeavors.
* I really like the premise for this story, but the characters don’t feel alive to me. I think the culture clash sounds intriguing, but I want more of a sense of the man and woman at the center of the conflict

Heather says
Dear Author,
Thank you very much for taking the time to query our agency. I have given your project thoughtful consideration; unfortunately, it is not a good fit for us at this time because, although the project seems to be very well conceived, I had some difficulty with your word choice in the query letter, and feel the manuscript may need extensive editing prior to being ready for shopping at publishing houses. However, after a revision of your query letter and manuscript, please feel free to resubmit to my attention.
Sincerely,
Heather

Thank you for submitting your book – A Single Pearl – for my consideration. May I say that I enjoyed reading your query. Regrettably, I do not feel that I am able to represent this particular book – a fact that has more to do with pressures on the time and resources at my disposal rather than on the book itself. Best wishes for your future endeavours, both with this book and with future projects. Agent Rik.
AgentforDay says
Dear Author,
Thank you for submitting SINGLE PEARL for my consideration.
Whereas I believe the multi-cultural subject matter is very timely, the query felt as though it were pieced together.
Please consider rewriting the query — clearly stating the hook — and resubmit.
Sincerely,
Agent for the Day
Sounds like a very interesting romance.
Does Kerrie Ann really know anything about Jae-Chun Lee? She falls in love with him, and despite his family’s prejudice, she marries him … but then he cruelly betrays her…. she leaves him… only to later learn that he might not be the villain she had come to think he was — maybe.
Sounds like a standard romance novel with the multi-culture twist. – There’s a market for it.

P.S. I have a hard time making the leap from paragraph one to the substance of paragraph two. The conflicts suggested by the first are interesting, though.

(Reasoning: The writing felt very clunky and awkward, which made the plot difficult for me to follow. The story seemed to have potential, but it was hard to tell because I had so much trouble following it.)

I love the idea of novels about cross-cultural couples, but the writing was too choppy. I had a hard time figuring out what was going on.

Dear Author,
Thank you for taking the time to submit your query to me.
At this moment in time, however, I choose to pass on your project. This does not automatically mean your query is not good enough. It simply means that I am not the right agent for this project. This can be for a number of reasons.
If you would like to know why, you can send a reply to this mail. Please change the subject line to: FEEDBACK / A SINGLE PEARL / YOUR NAME. I will respond to your request within two weeks.
Good luck with finding representation and keep on writing!

Thank you for your query. Your premise sounds interesting, and cross cultural interaction is an interest of mine, but the plot itself did not draw me in. Kerri seems very passive. Things happen to her, but she doesn’t seem to do anything. Without any understanding of Kerri’s drive I don’t really know what the story might be about, and will have to pass.
