Dear Agent for a Day:
I thoroughly enjoy your Blog – for the tremendous amount of helpful information, your witty comments, and the lively conversations. I hope that you’ll be interested in representing my 80,000-word urban fantasy novel, SHIMMERING DESTINY.
Donella Bard is an urban faerie masquerading as human, working as a repo gal. Her fae colleague, Fayette Callaghan, shows humans their personal destinies within a cheap crystal ball purchased at a Halloween shop. These fortunes are based on each person’s individual desires, and the fortune faerie steers her clients toward their own demise. For those who become bankrupt, Donella swoops in to repossess their belongings. For those destined to rule the world, Donella strikes a bargain to share in their ultimate power. However, fae are fickle and often delight in the complete ruin of civilization.
My writing has won numerous awards, including: a Silver Award and six Finalist placements in the ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards, three Finalist placements in the EPPIE Awards, and Winner of both the EPPIE and Dream Realm Awards. James A. Cox, Editor-in-Chief of the Midwest Book Review, has described me as a “story teller of considerable narrative skill.” Further information about my work is available on my website.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Author

Reasoning: Flattery is unnecessary; I felt the blurb was difficult to follow and did not present a likable character with a problem to solve.

Aside: [I can’t put my finger on why I like this one so much. However, I kept coming back to it over and over, rejecting more polished queries. There is a real sense of dark humor here and I was intrigued enough to want to read more.]

Dear Author:
Thank you for submitting your novel Shimmering Destiny. I am unable to offer you representation at this time.
Although I enjoy urban fanstasy, I was unable to determine if your voice in the book is comic or dark. Clarity in that area goes far in selling a piece. Keep working with this book. It has potential with the right agent.
Sincerely,
Honesty is the Best Policy

Dear Author,
Thank you for your submission. Unfortunately, I’m afraid I have to pass. I liked your premise, but I don’t know enough about your characters to know whether or not I would be likely to connect with them. If you can revise your query to tell me more about who your protagonist is and why I should care about his goal, you are welcome to resubmit.
Sincerely,
Agent for a Day

Dear Author,
Thank you very much for taking the time to query our agency. I have given your project thoughtful consideration; unfortunately, it is not a good fit for us at this time because, although the project is well conceived and well written, I do not typically represent this type of work and do not possess the necessary industry contacts to make a successful sale for you.
Sincerely,

Dear Author,
Thank you for the opportunity to represent your work. Unfortunately, it isn’t a good fit for me. Since you deserve an agent who will fully support you project, I will have to pass.
I wish you the best of luck in finding representation.

P.S. It might have merit, but I need to be hooked by a voice to invest in an anti-hero. More plot specifics would be very helpful. I would have read sample pages if they had been included. The premise is intriguing.

Dear Author,
Thank you for taking the time to submit your query to me.
At this moment in time, however, I choose to pass on your project. This does not automatically mean your query and/or work isn’t good enough. It simply means that I am not the right agent for this project. This can be for a number of reasons.
If you would like to know why, you can send a reply to this mail. Please change the subject line to: FEEDBACK / SHIMMERING DESTINY / AUTHOR. I will respond to your request within two weeks.
Good luck with finding representation and keep on writing!
