Hurricane Sandy

October 30, 2012 by Nathan Bransford 23 Comments

I did not expect to arrive in New York and be greeted with an October hurricane, but hey, never a dull moment in NYC. The winds were really intense last night but I was fortunate to only lose cable and Internet, which were back up this morning.

In case you need a sense of the scope of the storm effects, this gallery will show you all you need to know.

Thanks very much to the courageous first responders out there, including my friend Daniel José Older, and to everyone who put themselves in harm’s way last night to help people out. Now is a great time to consider donating to the Red Cross.

It looks like it’s going to be a while before things return to normal, but hope everyone is doing alright out there and thanks for all the well-wishes!

It's crazy right! I live just down the road from you and i'm still too wary to go outside! The tape won't be coming off the windows for a while, that's for sure!

Good to hear you're okay. We watched on CNN. That dangling crane by Times Square looked ominous.

Mother Nature has power, the kind that reminds us who is boss.

As a Flordian and veteran of many hurricanes, the devastation and human suffering is heartbreaking every time.Equally poignant is the courage of the responders as they rise to the challenge.

Glad you're OK, Nathan. Looks like you've just moved to a city that's really vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Let's hope they get it all cleared up.

Been keeping tabs on my mom, not quite in the heart of it but still feeling its effects. I echo the others– glad you're OK. I also second your commendation of all the folks on the front line helping out.

Happy to hear you are safe and well. Awful to hear of the loss of life and to see the destruction on the telly. The clean up is going to be long and painful.
    Red Cross. Definitely.

Our technology and modern advancements make it even clearer how much power nature has. It's remarkable how helpless we sometimes are.

Seconding the thanks to the first responders and the recommendation of the Red Cross.

Glad you are safe! Stay that way. I hope the worst is over.

Makes me feel better about living in Iowa. We have some tornadoes, but not much else. Give us a few hundred years, though, and it will be probably be a coastal state.

    Stay safe and warm!

Time to consider moving to Australia, Nathan? Seriously, hope everyone's weathered the storm and everything's returning to normal. Glad electricity and internet are back up.

You move to New York, and in one month New England gets an earthquake and a hurricane. Guess we just have to wait for the volcano.

But really, glad you're well and may everyone get power back soon and have a safe clean-up. My cousin works road crew in Jersey, and it's just nuts.

Glad you're ok, former agent man.
I'm writing this from work, the only place where I have power and email access.
My New Jersey suburb got hit–hardly anyone's home has power.
But my house not damaged, my family cold (no heat) but ok and surviving.
Agree with Red Cross needing help.
Hang in there. If nothing else, as we used to say when I was a young reporter, it's 'great copy.'
