Want to Guest Post? Take to the Forums!

April 19, 2011 by Nathan Bransford 29 Comments

The discussion forums at https://forums.nathanbransford.com are a little over a year old, and I’d like to plug a new evolution.

Do you have a post that you’d like to be featured on the main blog? I’m going to use the Forums as a sort of farm team if you will, a test lab, an incubator. I’m going to occasionally take some of the best posts from the Forums and promote them to the main blog to share with everyone else (with attribution and credit and all the rest).

I will be monitoring the Forums for the best posts, which can be posted in any category. Clever rants, informational topics, great questions for discussion… up to you.

Hope to see you there!

This sounds like a great idea.

The forum teems with unseen angler fish looking for a hook up.

It sounds like a good idea, but it's a little hazy (I drink a lot, though.) Do you just pick clever posts and let that person make a guest post, or do you want full blog post and then you post those to your blog? Is there a particular forum to post in for this? Where do baby storks come from?

I guess I should be posting in your forum then. Never thought about that. OK.

    Hi Nathan,

This is a great idea, and I look forward to seeing the guest post.

If you want to bring a little international perspective, I blogged on the e-book market in Europe today, and posted about it in your forum here:

I also would like to know if there's a particular thread for this, and I'm sober.

Only "clever" rants, eh? Well, that should narrow it down a bit. 😉
I'll have to check these out.

    chris-

I'll post posts from the Forums that work as blog posts. I'd rather people didn't just copy in things they've already written but really try to add to the Forum experience as well. Posts that generate a lively discussion will probably attract my attention more than ones that are just copied over. They can be posted in any Forum.

I think this is a cool idea, Nathan. The forums are a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful place and there are a lot of great posts and discussions there. I would love to see this draw in more people to the forums. The Bransforumers have so much fun – it can get silly, crazy, serious and always smart. Sometimes in the same thread.

Blogging Farm Team – it has a certain ring to it. This is a good way to give yourself a break in posting, as I've noticed quite a few main bloggers have been doing. It will also give lesser known bloggers another level to explore. (I'm including myself in this)

Nice to see this blog continues to evolve.

It's a nice concept. But I do think people mainly read this blog because of you, Nathan, not guest bloggers.

But I guess as long as you don't do it too often it can't hurt.

How cool. The forums are great fun, and this will make them even funner.

So, now I need to plan my take-over of the forums. I can't do it until school is out, but I have several extremely important posts in mind. The first being my extremely important goal of beating you in profile viewings, Nathan, since you have 63,000 and I don't. That is a serious problem that needs immediate attention, and I figured the forumers could help me with that.

I also agree with Anon – I think it's wonderful that you have guest posters and take breaks, lots of breaks, tons of breaks to feel rested and refreshed, but not TOO many breaks. If you know what I mean, because, although guest posters are wonderful, I would really miss you when you weren't posting.

Oh one more thought I hope you might consider encouraging Nathan, is that while these forum posts are a cool idea and how great for the poster if they get picked as a guest blog, but the forums are very important for discussion and questions and encouragement and sharing too. I'd hate to see the forums fill up with blog posts from people hoping to guest post but not participating in any of the actual forum discussions. I'd hate to see those posts get crowded out by guest blogger hopefuls.

The forums are really great everyone. The help I've received from some of the Bransforumers there is amazing and I am so grateful to them.

I'll second the sentiment that we mainly come here to hear the words of guru Nathan Bransford, but intermittent guest posts might enlighten us to other blogs of merit.

Love the idea, but I can't do it.

Although I write a great many articles on my site (about writing no less), I freeze up when I think about writing a guest post. Don't know why. I suddenly feel like I'm standing in front of a huge crowd with no clothes on and no clues about what to say.

Great idea. But I think that in order to have a fair selection on the blog posts, a topic/subject or more should be given each time, so all the people have a common base when posting.

Thank you for the post 🙂

Hi Nathan. Thought I might give this a try, but I failed the registration test! It keeps saying the single digit code I enter is incorrect, but it's showing me a really long number with spaces, like 758 1235 78965 362 8657 1002 92534 6787. I tried 7, as the number starts and ends with a seven. What am I doing wrong?

    JB Toner –

No he's not kidding. It's alittle confusing, but it asks you to enter a SINGLE digit number, and that number is always 8.

    Join up! 🙂

I tried that, and it worked, but I'm still confused. Since when did 8 become the only single-digit number? What about the other nine? Perhaps I'm just being dense?

I love to write in the middle of the night or very early in the morning while it's dark. This makes it easier for me to forget where I am and who I am and enter another world.

I am a major outliner. First I make a list of possible scenes and build on that. Once I have enough scenes, I put them on index cards and lay them out. Then I play with them a little, move them around until I'm happy with the results. I make my outline from there, but I don't stick to it like glue. In fact, I usually have to make several different outlines before the job is done. 🙂
